Web/Mobile App Critique

 For this discussion, I have decided to use the app Instagram. Even though I am primarily on tik tok I enjoy Instagram way more. Instagram has made updates along the way that allows users to be more interactive with the product. Another thing that I enjoy about Instagram is the choice of making your page private. Instagram has come a long way since the app first released October 6, 2010. Not more than two years later did Facebook purchase Instagram for a total of one billion dollars.  Instagram is mostly used by the 25-34 year old population. The main gender users of this app are males.

INSTAGRAMS USABILITY

Instagram is a social media app for ages 12 and older. This app unlike Facebook has no limits on followers or friends. This app is extremely user friendly and has been successfully running for over a decade. 

INSTAGRAMS DESIGN

Instagram is a free online social network that enables its users to post, edit and upload photos, videos and so much more. Random people are able to reach these photos and videos just by a simple scroll and or search. The technology that Instagram uses is the server side code which is powered by python.

INSTAGRAMS FUNCTIONALITY

Instagram has created a huge amount of Instagram user preferences and features. For instance, personally I do not like to receive notifications. Instead I have the option to turn off all notifications and continue on with my day as normal. Another feature that I take advantage of is hiding photos that I have been tagged in. Being allowed to do this is a life saver. This feature provides me the opportunity not only to see what I’ve been tagged in by a friend but it also lets me have a professional profile. By having a professional profile it will help while being looked at by jobs etc. Lastly, being able to filter out my DM. Given that I allow my page to be public, I receive a lot of DM’s from strangers. This isn’t always a bad thing, but sometimes it can make me uncomfortable. Instagram has filters for your messages. It allows me not to have to see or even interact with messages I may have received.

RECOMMENDATIONS

If there is something that I would change about Instagram, it would be the sponsors. Just like Facebook, I strongly dislike when things pop up for me to buy. Sometimes it is convenient to have them pop up and other times it’s creepy. For instance, if my wife and I were to discuss let’s say Zaxby's for instance, Zaxby's will pop up all over my feed. Another thing that I dislike about Instagram is the current story update. The Instagram stories are constantly starting over when someone posts something new instead of just beginning where the story left off. My last recommendation for improvement is to bring back being able to see posts that your friends like. Yes, I understand that everyone doesn’t want people to know what they’ve liked but I think that it motivates people to be more invested and connect with more people.


Upon my completion of this post I did not run into any recommendations. I did receive a lot of agreement on my suggestion to remove the ads. I think that they can be beneficial at times but overwhelming as I stated above. Furthermore I feel confident with my overall recommendations for instagram.

Computer systems are vulnerable to each kind of threat due to software and hardware designed flaws. The lack in these areas expose the computers to all sorts of threats. Technology advancement  is continuous due to the world's dependability on technology.
